College Within Reach

College preparatory event for foster youth.

Open to all foster youth in L.A. County, College Within Reach offers workshops about the college admissions and financial aid process as well as a college and resource fair where students can meet college reps and learn about available resources. The entire day is tailored to youth in care with the goal of giving students the necessary tools and information to begin college planning with every chance for success.

Over 80% of youth say they are more likely to go to college because of this event.

Prepping Kids For College

Over six hundred middle and high school aged foster youth attended our 13th annual College Within Reach event at the University of Southern California. Students, caregivers and service providers enjoyed a full day of college prep activities and workshops including a lunchtime college resource fair.

 

0377-E017-UFC-USC-CollegeWithinReach-9-29-12_LowRez8x10Over 110 volunteers assisted staff with logistics, presentations and classroom support. A big thank you for helping to make Saturday's event a special day for foster youth.

This year, our exciting partnership with Together We Rise provided over 60 bikes to middle school students. During the workshop each student assembled a bike that they took home with them at the end of the day.

The bikes will not only encourage the children to stay active but will also help build their confidence and self-esteem.

 

 

 

Foster youth need the chance to build a strong sense of self, and having access to their own bike to help them get to and from school and other activities and simply spend more time outside is a great way to help their ongoing development. Polly Williams, UFC President

Since starting the event 13 years ago, over 5,000 LA foster youth have participated in College Within Reach and UFC has sent over 500 kids to college!

UFC has partnered again with the USC School of Social Work to help foster youth get on the path to college. Open to 6-12 grade students living in foster care or emancipated foster youth, as well as caregivers and social workers.
