Helping Foster Youth go to college

UFC Education Programs

We believe that current dismal outcomes for foster kids relative to education can be changed.

Poor educational outcomes are a major factor in the lack of success foster youth experience in their transition out of care. By preparing more foster youth to graduate from high school (College Readiness) and attend and graduate from four-year colleges (College Sponsorship), UFC is dramatically increasing their chances for success.

Alumni Services

UFC has found the most effective way of making a true difference in the lives of foster youth is by developing long-term meaningful relationships that serve as a source of consistent support.

As part of UFC's family, our College Sponsorship Graduates can continue receiving much needed guidance, support and mentorship to help them be successful.

Relationships

Staying connected with graduates via email, phone and through events and activities held throughout the year provide an opportunity to stay in touch with students and continue to have an impact in their lives.

Financial Support

UFC offers fifth year funding to all Sponsorship students who complete their undergraduate program in four years to help them transition into their post-college lives. Funds help the youth pay for LSAT and GRE prep classes, furniture for their new apartments, and provide security deposits, as well as other related expenses.

Career Services

Graduates have an ongoing relationship with UFC's Career Development Manager, receiving guidance and support which can include resume and job search assistance, interview preparation, internship support, and career building activities and workshops - all designed to help students not only find and maintain employment but continue to broaden and enhance their career path.

Youth Advisory Board

Alumni participating in the Youth Advisory Board help to shape College Sponsorship programming by offering their input on what students need to be successful in college. Since inception, the board has developed an e-mentor program between program graduates and new students and has helped to shape events including a career mixer. Their advice is critical on how to improve UFC services and ways to build UFC’s College Sponsorship community.

Events + Activities

Events and activities held throughout the year provide graduates with the opportunity to reconnect with each other and UFC staff as well as meet the new sponsorship recipients. From social events to serving on student panels at orientation, these events are what help to provide the UFC family unit students remain so strongly connected to.

Giving Back

Caring for others and giving back to the community is key to the success of our program youth.

SPOTLIGHT

"I am one of 18 fellows selected to participate in the 2009-2010 Jesse M. Unruh Assembly Fellows Program! I am nervous and excited to work and live in the State Capitol! Upon the completion of the program, I hope to enter a Ph.D. program in Sociology. Thank you and all of the UFC staff for all your hard work (always)!"
