Preparing for a Career
Preparing for a career begins now!

Click on the Choosing a Major and Career section to do some research on the numerous possibilities.
Worried you might not have enough work experience when it’s time to tackle the job market? You have options! Students who invest in building career skills by participating in other activities give themselves a head start! Certificate courses or workshop trainings (often offered for free) are available at colleges and can be a quick and easy resume and skill booster. By earning a certificate in various computer programs, you can show potential employers that you are more competent than your competition. Community Services provides a full range of not-for-credit classes and programs designed to meet the educational, social, recreational, cultural, and civic needs of residents in the college community. Explore the Building Job Skills section for information on what you can do to get ahead.
If you can afford to work on a short-term basis without pay, volunteering is strongly suggested. Volunteering means you’ll be working for a good cause while investing time in your career goals and is also a great way to gain experience and to build your resume. You can work as a volunteer at a hospital, nursing home, youth center, playground, school or in other community service areas. Volunteer centers in your area are great places to look for a job. Once you’ve proven yourself as a volunteer, a potential employer will be more likely to hire you for a related job.
