Assistant Director of Strategic Gifts

Full-time, Exempt

The Assistant Director of Strategic Gifts (ADSG) will work with the President & CEO as well as the Chief Development Officer (CDO) to develop a Major Gifts and Planned Giving strategy.  The goal of this strategy is to cultivate and solicit $100,000+ gifts from current donors, as a means to help the organization transition away from its reliance on events.  The ADSG will work with the CDO to refine and define portfolios for the CEO, CDO, ADSG, Assistant Director of Development, and the Manager of Corporate Engagement.

  • Duties and Responsibilities :

    Team Leadership

    • As a leader on the development team, the ADSG will be the point person on developing a new strategic gifts strategy.
    • Provide major gift and planned gift solicitation training to team members.


    Donor Relations

    • Manage portfolio of donors and prospects utilizing internal databases and other resources to research capacity and propensity, segment current donors, qualify and disqualify prospects, develop cultivation strategies, and to upgrade gift levels.
    • Resolve donor issues and respond to inquiries and suggestions in a timely and appropriate manner.
    • Review all upcoming campaigns with CDO and Assistant Director of Development to ensure that data entry and back end servicing for the donor is understood, accurate, and recognition activities are executed.
    • Manage gift acknowledgement personalization for portfolio donors: including annual recognition programs and custom contacts including personal phone calls and handwritten notes.
    • Track touches and results of solicitations in the donor database.
    • Provide assistance and support for additional fundraising activities as directed by the Chief Development Officer
    • Create opportunities for both the CEO and CDO to be in front of Strategic Gift prospects when appropriate.



    • Work with the Assistant Director of Development and the Communications Coordinator to develop a written and verbal communication timeline and process for Strategic Gift donors.


    Programmatic Relationships

    • Develop strong working relationships with program staff to understand and articulate needs and case for support.
    • Create regular opportunities for donors to visit program sites.

  • Required Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree + 5-7 years of related experience
    • Proven track record of $100,000+ gift solicitation for social service organizations
    • Establishes and cultivates respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, including colleagues, customers, and donors
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively work as part of a team
    • Commitment to young people in foster care
    • Excellent writing and communication skills
    • Conveys thoughts and ideas clearly, listens well, communicates in a solution-oriented manner
    • Takes initiative and works well independently and collaboratively
    • Leads self and others to meet high expectations consistently
    • Demonstrates competency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master’s Degree in related field (M.Ed, MSW, MPA, MBA, etc)
    • Grant writing and reporting experience.
    • Experience with Salesforce database operations
    • Commitment to excellent customer service
Utilizing a five day a week full-time schedule between Monday-Friday, the ADSG will work from United Friends’ office in downtown Los Angeles and frequently travel to various locations across LA County for partner meetings. Some evening and weekend work is required.
